The SGS laboratory in Lakefield, Ontario, Canada now offers quantitative wastewater testing for SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA. Understanding the change in concentration of SARS-CoV-2 RNA at a site over time can provide early warning of a Covid-19 community outbreak before individuals become symptomatic or remain asymptomatic.

Coupled with delays in human testing and receiving results, wastewater testing could provide up to 7-days early notice of an outbreak.

Testing can be performed at the community level from a wastewater treatment plant inflow, or individual buildings in healthcare, industrial, workplace or university settings.

The test uses the same viral RNA gene markers and sensitive RT-qPCR techniques as the current reference method for human testing, providing high sensitivity and specificity. We provide quantitative concentration data with recovery and inhibition assessment.

Results are expected in a 2-3-day time frame from receipt of sample and will require 100 mL of sample. Expected hold time for the test is 5-7 days; efforts are underway to increase hold times.
