On October 23, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced finalized updates to the National Lead Laboratory Accreditation Program (NLLAP) guidelines, which establish crucial standards for lead testing laboratories across the United States. The newly published document, Laboratory Quality Standards for Recognition (LQSR 4.0), revises and enhances the previous standards established in 2007, aiming to improve consistency and alignment with EPA’s lead-based paint program activities.

Under NLLAP, laboratories must meet specific criteria to earn EPA accreditation, ensuring high-quality lead testing for public health protection. The revised standards streamline previous requirements while incorporating current best practices in lead analysis and sampling methodologies. This update supports ongoing efforts to reduce lead hazards, especially those associated with lead-based paint. Additionally, LQSR 4.0 complements the EPA’s broader regulatory initiatives, including the proposed updates to the Dust-Lead Hazard Standards and Dust-Lead Post-Abatement Clearance Levels under 40 CFR part 745.

Current NLLAP-accredited laboratories have until December 22, 2025, to transition to these new standards. This change provides laboratories with a clear pathway to maintain their EPA accreditation while strengthening their ability to deliver accurate, reliable testing for lead-based hazards.
