Beryllium
Sampling & Analysis

Beryllium comes in the form a gray or white powder.  It is used as an alloying agent in producing beryllium copper, which is extensively used for springs, electrical contacts, spot-welding electrodes, and non-sparking tools. It is applied as a structural material for high-speed aircraft, missiles, spacecraft, and communication satellites. Other uses include windshield frame, brake discs, support beams, and other structural components of the space shuttle.

The substance enters the body through ingestion or inhalation.  It is irritating to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of the dust may cause chemical pneumonitis. Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Lungs may be affected by repeated or prolonged exposure, resulting in cough, weight loss, and/or weakness. The effects may be delayed, and medical observation is indicated.
