Acrolein
Sampling & Analysis

Acrolein comes in the form of a colorless-to-yellow liquid with a piercing/disagreeable odor.  It is used as an herbicide to control submersed and floating weeds in waterways, and as a precursor in other chemical compounds. 

The substance enters the body through inhalation, ingestion, or skin/eye contact.  It can cause severe irritation of the eyes, mucous membranes, and the skin; it can also cause a decrease in lung function and increase pulmonary edema, as well as contribute to chronic respiratory diseases.
