SGS on the West Coast, Meet the Newest Members of our Team

Across North America, SGS continues to bridge gaps between global and local markets, growing with the intention of consistently expanding knowledge capabilities. In Hayward, California, we’re not only modernizing our laboratory, but appointing strong local leaders with decades of experience to our teams. We are very excited to highlight two new members of the SGS team, expanding our global ecosystem right here on the West Coast.

Dr. Yong Tae Ahn, Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor

Leading laboratory efforts, including performing bio-analysis and connecting clients to their data to ensure environmental analysis goals are exceeded, Dr Ahn has over 25 years of hands-on experience in the field of microbiology and molecular biology. With a Ph.D. from the University of Texas and over 26 peer-reviewed scientific journals published, he also worked at Stanford University Medical School as a postdoctoral research fellow where he developed many advanced molecular approaches for biomedical sciences.

His commitment to advancing the field includes designing and developing primers and probes for the qPCR and analyzing the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa in recreational water.

Bernard Thomas, Particle Identification Technical Manager

With over 20 years of hands-on experience in the field of particle and failure analysis, Bernard has published more than 5 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles using several advanced techniques for particle identification. He leads the team performing particle identification for wildfires and all other particle and failure analysis projects.

His expert knowledge in the field makes him an essential part of the SGS network of laboratories as he continues to pursue the analysis of water that is known to capture micro plastics in environment advancing environmental goals for a more sustainable future.

Adding these new experts to the SGS teams elevates our experience and allows for better access.

Experience through unique knowledge within our laboratories with less rework ensuring on time delivery and consistent, high-quality data.
Access to an extensive library of resources and answers to analytical questions directly through subject matter experts.
Save time, get guaranteed best practice sample handing, and so much more through our networks.

Services provided in our Carson, California location:

Micro

  • Fungal Non-viable air analysis (spore trap)
  • Non-viable bulk analysis (swab, tapelift, bulk material)
  • MUG (4-Methylumbelliferone Glucuronide) a positive/negative test for total coliform, e-coli and enterococcus in water and sewage screens.

Metals

  • ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy) used to analyze multiple inorganic elements in paint, wipes, water, soil, air and bulk matrices. Widely used for hazardous waste characterization such as RCRA 8, CAM 17, Title 22, as well as air sample analysis for NIOSH 7303 and OSHA ID 125G modified.

Each of our experienced staff is a combination of team player and experienced practitioner in their discipline, and our team continues to exceed client expectations. They are highly skilled at analyzing a variety of samples, assessing sample matrices, and providing detailed reports.
