We’ll Help You Solve the EPA 325 Puzzle

As scientists, of course, we look at all challenges as puzzles just waiting to be solved. Often, the only reason a puzzle can’t be solved is if a piece is missing. When it comes to EPA 325 VOC analysis, SGS Galson has all the pieces in place to meet your fenceline monitoring requirements. First, allow me to review EPA 325 and the required method. EPA 325 evaluates overall emissions from refineries, determining benzene and other VOCs. Refineries in the US must continuously monitor emissions within facilities and around perimeters, so this method complies with US federal regulations. Passive sampling monitoring was enacted by the EPA based on its ability to detect benzene at lower levels than current real-time monitoring methods. Passive monitoring methods offer several technical and practical benefits, including low detection limits, high accuracy and precision, results that are time integrated over a number of days, no requirement for sampling pumps, ease of use, and significant cost savings. SGS Galson provides the best in electronic data delivery through extensive lab information management systems that ensure accuracy, quality control, and client satisfaction. Many of these services are industry innovations and we are always adding more. While benzene is the primary target compound, the sampling and analysis methodology can also be used to determine other VOCs, including butadiene, ethylbenzene, toluene, xylenes and other hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). No missing pieces on this puzzle. We’ve identified the nine ways SGS Galson will help meet your monitoring needs: Quality Assurance – QA has a role in everything we do. Complete VOC Solutions – The largest array of equipment for all VOC testing...

Don’t Fret, Field Practioners: You Are Not Alone

In the hustle and bustle of today’s work environment, many times it feels absolutely impossible to get everything done at the level we want it done. To describe the work of field consultants as “multitasking” seems like an understatement. You meet with your clients, develop a plan, conduct field testing, follow up with recommendations, and answer questions—usually for several clients at once. But these may not be the things you are worrying about most. It’s those things you don’t have total control over that represent the most significant chance of failure, letting your clients down, and ultimately losing their trust and their business. You ask yourself: How am I going to get the gas monitor to the job site? If it doesn’t start or breaks down, how will I replace it? If I’m not on the job site, will monitoring be performed up to my company’s standards? While on a job site, how will I get access to real-time data that I really need to do the job right? And am I using the newest and best technology to get the job done most efficiently and effectively? While these are legitimate concerns, you don’t have to feel or act alone. Before selecting an IH laboratory to partner with, do your due diligence to see if they can be just that: a partner in getting the job done right. In this day and age, laboratories can no longer be considered a commodity. There are significant differentiating factors. Some labs will loan and rent you the equipment you need, take full responsibility for transportation, act on the dime if equipment malfunctions,...

Safety Day – Assess Your Risk, Take Control

Does a company whose team spends its every waking moment helping workers worldwide stay safe and healthy need to take the time to make sure its workers stay safe and healthy? You bet! On September 22, we at SGS Galson took time to celebrate “Safety Day 2016” by gathering our entire team the new-fashioned way – electronically – in a live webinar titled “Assess Your Risk, Take Control”. We acknowledged that whether we’re performing analyses in the lab, preparing shipments for our FreePumpLoan and Galson Hygiene Rental programs, doing office work or even working at home, hazards are all around us. By proactively identifying these hazards and understanding their risk levels, we have a better opportunity to mitigate or eliminate those risks. To sharpen our hazard identification skills we participated in a “hazard hunt” where we formed teams and identified multiple hazards in a number of photos. Not only did we have fun, but it strongly reinforced that hazards may be lurking all around us. We then got a bit more serious by reviewing the steps in our formal risk assessment process and understanding its benefits. The bottom line is as an organization, we do everything we can to reduce risks in the workplace but ultimately it is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone is in charge of identifying and eliminating risks. And, of course, assessing risks and taking control is not a once a year exercise. As a matter of fact, training will be ongoing throughout the year, every year. For example, department representatives will soon meet to review safely changing a gas cylinder. There’s a lot at stake for us,...

OSHA ANNOUNCES FINAL SILICA RULE – WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?

After many years in the making, OSHA announced today its highly anticipated but also controversial final Silica rule. This new rule brings worker health protection against silicosis and other silica-related diseases into the 21st century by replacing its 45 year old outdated permissible exposure limit (PEL).  Long time coming – but congratulations to OSHA for its hard work in pushing this into law. Here at SGS Galson, we welcome the new rule and are ready to serve and assist our clients in coming into compliance with the new rule. We have anticipated and prepared for this new rule and are ready to serve you. We currently meet all the new laboratory qualifications and are ready to help. There are many new provisions to the standard that will impact the Industry and could affect 2.3 million workers of which 2 million work in construction.  The new rule is actually two new standards. One for General Industry and Maritime, and the other for Construction.  Although there are two separate standards, there is a great deal of overlap in the requirements. The highlights for each new standard: Construction Small-business employers can use specified dust control methods in lieu of sampling Must have a written exposure plan Defined housekeeping practices Offer medical exams Train workers Keep records New PEL (8 hour TWA) is 50 ug/m3 of crystalline silica (all 3 polymorphs) New action level is 25 ug/m3 Timeline for implementation – employers have until June 23, 2017 –except for laboratory qualifications Laboratory Qualifications: Implemented by June 23, 2018 Evaluates all samples using the procedures specified in one of the following analytical methods: OSHA...

SGS Galson Celebrates World Accreditation Day

By Denise MacDuff Environment, Health & Safety QA Manager On June 9, 2016, you are invited to celebrate with SGS Galson World Accreditation Day 2016, a global initiative jointly established by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC), to raise awareness of the importance of accreditation. Throughout the world, laboratory accreditation is a means to determine technical competence and assure clients of obtaining services that meet a specific standard. This year’s World Accreditation Day theme, Accreditation: A Global Tool to Support Public Policy, focuses on how accreditation can be a global tool to support public policy for all areas in the public sector – national and local governments, and regulators. You can read some case studies related to this year’s theme here. SGS Galson’s accreditation is provided by the American Industrial Hygiene Association Laboratory Accreditation Programs, LLC (AIHA-LAP, LLC) to the ISO/IEC 17025:2005 International Standard for the General requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories. Our accreditation (SGS Galson Lab ID: 100324) not only assures you of quality, consistency and reliability, but it also gives SGS Galson global recognition under the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation Mutual Recognition Arrangement (ILAC-MRA).  Accreditation assures that you receive high quality services from SGS Galson worldwide, under the ILAC umbrella. With accreditation you are assured that our staff has proper qualifications, testing protocols are valid, measurements are traceable to international standards, strict reporting procedures are followed, a sound quality management system is in place, and more. Accreditation is just not a requirement to SGS Galson; it’s a vital way to ensure the best solutions for you and all...

TROUBLESHOOTING OUR MOST POPULAR PUMPS

SGS Galson Laboratories’ FreePumpLoan™ program puts quality air sampling pumps at your disposal easily, quickly and, of course, free. To optimize the experience, we provide instructions with each pump and have an excellent client service team available 24/7/365 to help resolve any problems. If you are using the pumps, no doubt, you are technically savvy; and because time is money, we thought it would be useful to provide a reminder of the most common problems that can be easily diagnosed and fixed by you in the field on the GilAIr and AirCheck 52 pumps. If you experience a fault while sampling and the pump shuts itself off, denote the time the pump has run from the LCD, found  on the side of GilAir pump or top of the AirCheck 2 pump. Address the fault cause with the troubleshooting instructions below and restart sampling. The Aircheck 52 and GilAir have some common troubleshooting issues, and some are different, which we indicate below. For both air pumps, two basic faults can occur: ●     Air flow being restricted or cut off. The AirCheck 52 will show a broken arrow on the LCD display next to the timer indicating a flow fault. OR ●     An insufficiently charged battery. When troubleshooting a flow fault, look for these issues, with reasonably easy fixes: 1.    When you encounter kinked or restricted tubing, re-route tubing to ensure unrestricted flow. Using an SGS Galson Personal Exposure Vest with built in tubing channels can eliminate this issue completely! 2.    When your pump inlet filter is clogged or dirty, the filter can be cleaned manually with tap water. If a new...
