Sampling & Analysis

Chromium, soluble hexavalent comes in the form of a variety of chemical properties, uses, and workplace exposures. Their properties include corrosion-resistance, durability, and hardness. Workers may be exposed to airborne particles when these compounds are manufactured from other forms of chromium (eg, the production of chromates from chromite ore); when products containing Chromium are used to manufacture other products (eg, chromate-containing paints, electroplating); or when products containing other forms of chromium are used in processes that result in the formation of Cr(VI) as a by-product (eg, welding). 

The substance, as a by-product of manufacturing, can be found in air, soil and water.  The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that chromium(VI) compounds are carcinogenic to humans. These health effects include irritation of the lining of the nose, runny nose, and breathing problems (asthma, cough, shortness of breath, wheezing). Workers have also developed allergies to chromium compounds, which can cause breathing difficulties and skin rashes.
