Benzyl alcohol
Sampling & Analysis

Benzyl Alcohol comes in the form of colorless liquid with a sharp burning taste and slight odor.   It is used as a local anesthetic and to reduce pain associated with LIDOCAINE injection. It is also used in the manufacture of other benzyl compounds, as a pharmaceutic aid, and in perfumery and flavoring.

The substance enters the body through inhalation, ingestion, or skin/eye contact.  It causes irritation of the upper respiratory tract; prolonged inhalation can result in headache, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.  In severe cases, it can cause respiratory and muscular paralysis, convulsions, narcosis, and even death.  Ingestion can cause severe irritation of the gastrointestinal tract, nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhea.
